Noatikl 2 User Guide

Introduction to Noatikl

Noatikl screen

Noatikl 2 is a combination of both the Noatikl generative (MIDI) music engine, and the Partikl synth/audio engine. The Noatikl music engine uses various algorithms and rules to create musical information in the form of both MIDI notes and MIDI controller events. These MIDI notes and controllers can be used both to drive the Partikl synth/audio engine, and to generatively control settings of your own favourite synths, FX units and samplers.

Noatikl has extensive built-in scripting features. Noatikl can also be used as a customisable hyperinstrument!

Noatikl is available for both Windows and Mac OS X and comes in a number of different variants so that it can fit it with the way you prefer to use your favourite audio tools!

Noatikl draws on the Zen koan tradition in that there seems no obvious way it generates its ideas, and it is pronounced "noh – tickle". To quote a haiku by Mark Harrop:

Music, recorded,
A meal, frozen.
noatikl: Real,
home, fresh cooking.

Noatikl is created by Pete Cole and Tim Cole, creators of the 2001 BAFTA-award winning SSEYO Koan Interactive Audio Platform, the 2005 BAFTA-award winning SSEYO miniMIXA, Liptikl (2007+) and Mixtikl (2008+).

A first look at Noatikl 2

Once you've started Noatikl, and used the File New or File Open menu item either to create a new file or open an existing file, you are shown a view looking something like that in the picture above. The picture shown was taken while Noatikl was playing.

The central panel shows a view of all Noatikl Voices, together with cells showing the associated MIDI channel and any Partikl Synth, Track Effect and Global Effect settings (and any custom DLS/audio Samples...).

The top panel contains the Play/Stop button (press Play to hear Noatikl!), as well as information on piece progress, and fast access to some key MIDI options (as these are very important for many Noatikl users!)

The left panel lets you select which group of Noatikl Objects and Parameters you want to edit.

The bottom panel gives you access access to all the editors for the group of Objects and Parameters you select in the left panel. In the above picture, the Voices are listed together with their basic parameter values. Voices will flash here to show that they are playing a note.

There is much more detail on all the above in the rest of this User Guide. We hope you enjoy the read!
